Winter X Games 16

Medal Design

Aspen, Colorado // January 26-29, 2012

I proposed a medal re-design for this year's Winter X Games 16 in Aspen, Colorado. I was inspired by the history of the event, the acrobatics of the athletes competing, and the Winter X lifestyle and culture. The ring is to be made of gold medal, warped & twisted slightly to resemble snow on the slopes. The outside is 16-sided to commemorate the 16th year of the Winter X Games, while the inside of the ring is 10-sided to recognize the 10th consecutive year of the event in Aspen, Colorado. The X Games logo is seemingly floating in the ring's center, and spins around the Y-axis, referencing the rotations these athletes make mid-air. I also incorporated a bottle-opener into medal, by using it as the ribbon holder, and would allow athletes to really celebrate by opening celebratory adult beverages as soon as possible (whether they twist-off or not). The ribbon’s 3 light blue diamonds represent the 3 sports of Snowboarding, Skiing, and Snowmobiling of the Winter X Games.

I designed a scale rendering and then created a one-off prototype to see how the medal worked in space to visualize better. Ideally, these would be adapted to Silver & Bronze medals to fully complete the branding system.
